Scene

If, like the French, you have an inexhaustible affection for the cinema, you must hie to Bercy and visit La Cinematheque Francaise. I came to see "The Incredible Shrinking Man" (1957) and was accompanied by a group of schoolchildren who seemed transfixed by Scott Carey's existential struggle.

A moderator introduced the movie to them, at one point holding up a pin she had attached to her shirt. After the movie, she asked the kids about what other tools Carey used to survive ("a spool of thread!" "a matchbox!" they cried), about how he adjusted to his new reality and what they thought about the ending. It was a quintessentially French experience.

The bookstore on the premises is a national treasure. Go.
